Neil Armstrong: The Greatest Astronaut

By: Althea

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This is what Neil Armstrong said as he took his first steps onto the moon. There are many facts to know about him and impacts on other peoples’ lives, but I’ll just say a few. At first, he loved airplanes and wanted to see the world up high. So, he got his wish. It all started on August 5, 1930, an astronaut was born.

First, he was born on August 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He also had many houses. Then, his sister June was born in 1932. His first flight was when he was six, 1936, and started to love flying that eventually led him to the moon. Then, at 1956, he married Janet Shearon. A year after that, they had a son named Eric on 1957. Then, on 1959, their daughter Karen was born. But unfortunately, Karen died from a brain tumor in 1962. A year after that, son Mark was born on 1963. In 1994, Armstrong marries Carol, his second wife.

Next, when he was 16, he got his pilot license. A year after that, he started studying at Purdue University. However, he was interrupted for being called up to fight in Korea. He then flew 78 combat missions on 1950.Then, he goes back to collage and earns a degree on 1952-1955. He continues his professional life by becoming a test pilot in 1957. Then, President Kennedy announces to plan a moon landing in 1961. So Neil Armstrong becomes an astronaut trainee in 1962. Armstrong then has his first space mission as a commander of Gemini 8 in 1966. He lands and is the first to step on the moon. Remember what I told you in the beginning? Well, this is what he said while he was on the moon, his famous quote. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” So after a while they went back home. In 1971 to 1979, he worked as a professor for Aerospace Engineering University of Cincinnati. But in 1986, he became a vice chairman of Challenger Inquiry.

Then, so many people looked at the moon wishing that they could go there. In fact, Neil Armstrong made that wish come true for all of us. In addition, he also donated money to charities. He taught me that if you are determined, brave, work as a team, and work hard, you could reach any goal of your life. Scientists couldn’t have learned more about the moon without him.

Up to the present time, he is a great man who lives in Ohio with his second wife, Carol. So this is the life, professional life, and the impacts of Neil Armstrong. His footsteps are left on the moon for centuries. Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, will never be forgotten.
